Abstract

The ancient wheel cross , known as the Celtic Cross which is seen historically as a symbol of the sun, was really a device, for angular determination or measurement of the position of the sun, employing a cross-arm structure with a sighting arm for alignment with a star or planet, either viewed along it, or from one side; the angle of inclination of the arm being determined by either a pendulum or plumb line, freely suspended from the arm intersection; a scale interposed between the arms; a scale reading being taken where the pendulum or plumb line intersects the scale; or, alternatively, a plumb weighted scale, is pivotally mounted at the intersection of the cross-arms, with an index upon one cross-arm for scale reading, whereby, if correctly sighted, the scale reading reflects target angle of elevation or inclination

	The primary mathematics employed were geometric proving an observational accuracy of 3 arc minutes supported by the discovery of the more sophisticated protractor and exponential scale known as "The Dixon Relics" discovered in 1872 by Waynman Dixon and recorded by Piazzi Smyth in the Pyramid of Khufu in Egypt, now hidden by incompetence or design.

	Historical research has been employed covering a period from the Palaeolithic to the Middle ages mainly concentrating on the continents of America, South America, Africa and Europe. Studies have been undertaken of Indigenous art, myth, astrology, constructions and diffusion including the Maya, Aztec, Inca and Hopi Indians, Egyptians, Mesopotamians, Sea People, Israelites, Romans, Essenes, Celts, Scandinavian and the Scottish and Irish sea faring tribes.
	Mediaeval Churches and their symbolism have been investigated, Knight Templars, Roman Catholic Church, Celtic Christianity and 8th Century Moslem science in Spain and Morocco.


	The evidence in support of a hidden or forgotten scientific method explaining the many unanswered problems and anomalies surrounding our knowledge of Mankind's pre history appears overwhelming in the light of the discovery of this simple yet highly sophisticated and capable instrument that has become the worlds most famous Icon.
